Ronaldo praises Benzema and Varane despite defat to France

Cristiano Ronaldo was full of praise on Sunday (12th October) for his French team mates at Real Madrid as Karim Benzema and Raphael Varane helped guide 'Les Bleus' to a 2-1 win over Portugal in their Euro 2016 qualifier.

Despite a 2-1 defeat, Cristiano Ronaldo appeared satisfied with Portugal's performance against France in their friendly in Paris.

Portugal striker and captain  Cristiano Ronaldo commenting on Karim Benzema, France striker who plays with him in Real Madrid and who scored against Portugal on Saturday:
"Karim played good. He scored a goal, a lucky goal, I say. But he's a striker, being in that place, he should be there. So I am happy for him. I am not happy because he scored against Portugal but I am happy for the other side, because that's gonna give him motivation to be better for Real Madrid. So I am good because every week I play with him, so it will be good."

It was the first game in charge for new Portugal coach Fernando Santos.
France have already qualified, but will take on all the teams in Euro 2016 qualifying Group I as preparation for the European Championships.

For Portugal, their next real test comes against Denmark in Copenhagen on Tuesday (14th October).

Ronaldo will be looking to make amends for a 1-0 defeat to Armenia in their opening game of qualification, a loss that cost ex-Portugal coach Paulo Bento his job.

"Varane has potential to be one of the best defenders in the world. He is still young, he is 21 years old, he is fast, plays good, out to defend. He is a very good boy, he is a very humble boy, he likes to learn. And to play with (Sergio) Ramos and Pepe, which for me they are three of the best defenders in the world, I think Varane can learn more because these two players they have a lot of experience ". ~ Ronaldo
