Real Madrid defeated Liverpool 3-0 in UEFA Champions League Group B
Reaction after Real Madrid defeated Liverpool 3-0 in UEFA Champions League Group B on Wednesday (22 October).
Cristiano Ronaldo's 70th UEFA Champions League goal and a double from Karim Benzema guided Real Madrid to a 3-0 win over Liverpool as the reigning champions notched a third straight victory in Group B on Tuesday.
All the goals came in a devastating 18-minute spell in the first half at Anfield, with Ronaldo moving to within one goal of Raul Gonzalez's record tally in the competition by flicking in a superb opener in the 23rd minute.
The goal punctured Liverpool's bright start and Real took control, with Benzema heading in the second in the 30th minute and making it 3-0 from close range.
Mario Balotelli's miserable start to his Liverpool career continued as he was substituted at half-time - and swapped shirts with an opponent while walking to the dressing room.
"I believe it is a very important victory because we started the game playing very well in a lovely football atmosphere and against an opponent we knew would do everything possible to give us problems. But we followed it up well and player well..
It's a very good moment for us. We are in a good condition and we are playing well and all the team is concentrated and so we played the game well. But Barcelona will also go into this game in an ideal position." ~ Carlo Ancelotti
Liverpool manager Rodgers said his sides were better in the second half of the game, He said his boys conceded poor goals in the first half.
"We've conceded a disappointing goal and then the other two were sloppy and nowhere near to what we would want. And obviously at 3-0 against a team scores so many goals it can be so dangerous, it can be a dangerous game then. I've got to give a big credit to the players because that first period of the game they were very good. We conceded poor goals against a top side, but then second half we technically were much better. Kept possession of the ball better and were a threat. Overall I thought it was a bit harsh for us to be 3-0 down at half-time, but you see their quality and speed and level of their game is at a high level. But obviously it's disappointing when you're (losing) 3-0 at half-time." ~ Liverpool manager Rodgers

"Yep, and it's exactly the same. We had an incident last year with a player and that was something that was dealt with internally. I obviously heard that (Balotelli swapped shirts) when I came off the pitch. It's not something I stand for. If you want to do that for me, it's something you do at the end of the game and it's something I'll deal with tomorrow." ~ Liverpool manager Rodgers
