Landon Donovan to captain U.S.A against Ecuador

Head coach Jurgen Klinsmann has announced that Landon Donovan will don the captain's armband for the U.S.A. against Ecuador in their friendly at East Hartford, Connecticut on Friday (10 October).

United States men's national team coach Jurgen Klinsmann said on Tuesday (7 October) that Landon Donovan will start and play about 30 minutes against Ecuador this Friday.
The U.S. team has been training at Harvard University since Monday (6 October) and Klinsmann, speaking after a session on Tuesday, explained that the 32-year-old Donovan will open the match at Rentschler Field as captain.

The Los Angeles Galaxy forward, who is retiring at the end of the latest Major League Soccer season, has scored 57 goals for the United States. It will be the 157th international appearance for Donovan, a veteran of three World Cups who was controversially dropped by Klinsmann for this year's tournament in Brazil.

The match against Ecuador is the first of three friendlies before the end of the year for the Americans; they will also take on Honduras on 14 October in Boca Raton, Florida and the Republic of Ireland on 18 November in Dublin.

Klinsmann intends to revise his roster for the Honduras match.
