John O'Shea celebrated his 100th cap for Ireland
John O'Shea celebrated his 100th cap by scoring in the fourth minute of
stoppage time to give Ireland a 1-1 draw with Germany in Gelsenkirchen
on Tuesday (October 14), as the World Cup holders suffered another
setback in their 2016 European Championship campaign
"yeah look, to do with anything..the night in question, the amount of caps I had achieved and to do it in the last minute against Germany away from home is very very special. The lads were trying to jump all over me and I was trying to know them off and enjoy the moment with the fans. Look, it is one of those things, my celebrations always need a bit of work so I don't score enough to improve them." O'Shea said
"Yeah, I think that is when we played our best stuff then as well because obviously we had to take a chance. We had to go for it, we had to try and get something from it. Obviously Wes (Hoolahan) - as I said - very unlucky, great little bit of player and another couple of times he has slipped when we are in goal positions but, as I said Jeff (Hendrick) has pulled a great ball back to me and I was there to tuck it away." He added
Toni Kroos scored in the second half to put Germany ahead as they sought to bounce back from a loss to Poland.
Kroos hammered home a low drive in the 71st minute with what was then Germany's 17th shot.
Ireland only had managed one until then, but O'Shea's late strike stunned Joachim Loew's team.
Ireland captain Robbie Keane said he knew the game will be tough but they make use of their chance despite Germany having the possession.
"Yeah, of course. I think we need everybody. We need a squad of players and I had said it before - that this was going to be a difficult game. Players were going to have to work their socks off and it doesn't matter if you play sixty minutes and then someone else comes on because you are only get to a tournament if you use the squad of players and we have certainly done that in the last few games. It has worked for us." said Robbie Keane
"Well listen, I think that was down to us more than them. I think I have mentioned before that the work rate from every player trying to stop them from getting opportunities. I think they had the first opportunity in the first few minutes when they hit the crossbar. After that I can't really remember too many opportunities that they had. Obviously the goal was a great finish. We didn't have too many opportunities. They had a lot of possesion but without really hurting us. The shape - the team shape - from everyone was very good and I felt more us kept them at bay rather than them being poor." ~ Robbie Keane
