England defeated Marino 5 - 0 at Wembley Stadium

Roy Hodgson said it was "job done" after England defeated San Marino 5-0 at Wembley on Thursday night (9th October) in a European Championship qualifier the Three Lions were always expected to win.

England inflicted San Marino's 60th consecutive loss in their 2016 European Championship qualifier on Thursday, while Group E rival Switzerland surprisingly lost again.

"I think we should stop being surprised these days in international football. I don't think we can anymore just expect because you happen to be called Switzerland or Spain or Russia or England that whoever you play you're going to beat them because they don't have as many people in the country as you do. I think we've got to stop that. San Marino, I thought they were better this year. I thought they were actually a better team then they were last year.
So they are making strides for it albeit that as an amateur team it is going to take them awhile before they can beat the likes of us at Wembley, I hope anyway." ~ Roy Hodgson
Wayne Rooney scored his 42nd international goal from the penalty spot to go within seven of England's all-time top-scorer, Bobby Charlton, but the captain wasted several chances to close the gap further.

San Marino, who are joint bottom of FIFA's world rankings with Bhutan, prevented England from scoring until the 24th minute through Phil Jagielka's header in a first-half when the hosts lacked tempo.

After Rooney's strike before half-time, Danny Welbeck and Andros Townsend netted after the break, and Alessandro Della Valle scored an own goal.

"In general it's the job done, it's an important job done," said Hodgson after the 5-0 victory.

"We've got our points from this game and now we can concentrate all our attention on our next game in Estonia where we have very little preparation time of course."
